What it is
Beta-Alanine is a non-essential amino acid best known in sports nutrition circles for its role in muscular endurance. In MemoHoney, it's included specifically for a different downstream effect: its relationship to carnosine.
How it works
Beta-Alanine combines with the amino acid L-Histidine to form carnosine, a dipeptide stored in tissue throughout the body. Carnosine is studied for its antioxidant properties — specifically, its ability to buffer reactive byproducts that accumulate during normal cellular metabolism, sometimes referred to as oxidative stress.
Why antioxidant support matters here
Circulation and cellular energy production (the roles L-Arginine, L-Citrulline and Niacin play) both involve active metabolic processes, which naturally generate some oxidative byproducts as a side effect. Beta-Alanine's inclusion is meant to help offset that, rounding out the formula with a protective, rather than purely activating, mechanism.
The tingling sensation
Some people notice a temporary tingling or "pins and needles" sensation (paresthesia) after taking beta-alanine, particularly at higher single doses. It's considered harmless and dose-dependent; splitting doses or taking it with food can reduce it for people who are sensitive.
Safety notes
Beta-Alanine is generally well tolerated at supplement-level doses. As with any new supplement, those who are pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition should confirm suitability with a doctor before starting.
